1. Plan ahead. Impromptu can be nice too, but if you’re not an experienced home entertainer it is better to plan ahead and make sure you have everything you need.
2. Utilise your home’s best features. A table and chairs under a shady tree or umbrella is great if you don’t have a pergola. Host movie nights with pizza if you have a home theatre, invite friends for barbecues if your kitchen is small.
3. Prepare your home. Tidying up and cleaning the house shows your guests that you want them to feel comfortable. If there is a chance some guests may stay overnight, have spare bedrooms ready and clean the bathrooms they will use.
4. Plan what will go where. Decide where you will put the drinks, glasses and food before your guests arrive.
5. Add a few special touches. Make your guests feel welcome with drinks ready on ice, pre-dinner nibbles, table decorations and mozzie candles if you’re outside in the evening.
6. Don’t forget introductions. When your guests arrive make sure you introduce everyone if some of your guests haven’t met before.
