It’s a new year, and that means a swathe of new home styling trends to try.
When it comes to styling your home, it’s all about what suits you, your personality and your needs best. It’s a great chance to express yourself and make your home somewhere you absolutely love spending time, and many trends can also be functional as well.
These are the top home styling trends we expect to see this year.
Hello colour!
Bold colours are seeing a lot of popularity not only in the home, but in fashion as well. We’re talking deep jewel tones and soothing earth shades that make your home feel cosy, but still luxurious.
Get inspired by 2023’s Pantone Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta, and add some pops of colour to your home. You can start with small accents like soft furnishings or bed sheets, some statement furniture pieces, or if you’re feeling brave, hero a colour on a feature wall. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different patterns and textures as well.
A bit of nostalgia
The last couple of years have made us all feel a bit nostalgic in nearly every part of life – from what we wear, to the movies we watch, and the things we like to do. Home styling is no different, where traditionally more ‘old-fashioned’ elements have made their way back in.
This trend has been inspired by the resurgence of op-shopping and vintage, particularly amongst younger people who are conscious of sustainability and the environment. It comes to life at home with things like vintage-style fixtures and knobs, light fittings, wallpaper and other furnishings and decor.
You can bring some nostalgia to your home in really easy and affordable ways – spend a day op-shopping to find some vintage treasures, or even visit a family member to see if they have any heirlooms they can pass down.
Styling sustainably
Speaking of sustainability, this will continue to be something we see a lot more awareness of when it comes to the home. While cheap, DIY furniture is sometimes the best way to set your home up on a budget, they can tend to be pieces that wear and break easily, and sadly end up in landfill.
The nostalgia trend is likely to lead into more interest in vintage and used furniture, which ultimately means people are buying less new furniture. Buying second hand furniture through auctions, second-hand sellers, or other sources like Facebook Marketplace or GumTree is not only good for the environment, but you can find some incredible pieces and buy them for a fraction of the original price. Don’t forget the classic hard-rubbish hunt, or a good old garage sale!
This trend will flow into the rest of the home as well, with shoppers favouring natural materials over plastic and polyester.
A touch of luxury
The last couple of years have also seen us all become shopping aficionados, and we’re seeing a lot more people think about quality versus quantity when it comes to home styling. Cost of living pressures also means we can’t necessarily splash out on everything, so it’s about investing in key pieces that will bring in that sense of luxury.
If the top tier couch isn’t in the budget, why not splurge on a genuine cashmere blanket instead to add that bit of luxe. Go more affordable on the dining table, but maybe splurge more on some stylish chairs. Sites like Instagram and Pinterest are endless sources of styling and shopping inspiration, so you can spend time hunting for that key piece to save up for and bring into your home to treasure for a long time.
Vacation vibes
While we couldn’t travel over the past couple of years, we started bringing the vacation to us with decor and styling touches inspired by our favourite holiday destinations.
This trend is all about capturing the emotions of those faraway places, whether it be a villa in the Mediterranean, a cozy ski lodge or a countryside cottage. The best part of this is that it’s fun and easy to do – think checkered linen tablecloths, mismatched glassware, textured couch cushions, or luxurious wool throws for the bed.
Wellness inside and out
Wellness has become part of our everyday, as we’ve all started bringing in little changes to look after our physical and mental health. This has found its way into our homes too, with little spaces or even entire rooms of homes now dedicated to wellness.
We’re expecting to see a lot more home gyms, reading nooks and spaces for meditation and relaxation, as well as much more use of outdoor spaces. Extending your living space into your backyard not only provides more space to relax and entertain, but allows you to get connected to nature – think outdoor seating areas, outdoor kitchens, firepits and abundant landscaping.
If you don’t quite have the space to dedicate a whole room, you can bring in a sense of wellness with something as simple as candles, Himalayan salt lamps or soft lighting.
You do you
Despite what the trends may be, we think that when it comes to your home, it’s important to be true to yourself and make your home somewhere you love to spend time. Don’t be afraid to throw out the rule book and mix it up, combining the modern and classic, colourful and neutral.
Make sure your home works for you, and take your time to consider how you want to bring in furniture and styling touches to each space. If you’re renting and aren’t able to make as many permanent alterations, there are still plenty of things you can do to make it feel like home. Check out our 7 home decorator hacks for renters.
