All over Adelaide, people are about to be swamped by the silly season once again. We always know it’s coming but are we ever ready? Never!
Every year we intend to be better prepared, but it still sneaks up so that we suddenly find ourselves with more frantic flurry than festive fun or frivolity. So, let’s start preparing our Adelaide homes for a stress-free and flurry-less festive season now!
Tackle Your Outdoor Living Space
We do love Christmas outdoors in Adelaide, so if you’ll be having guests this Christmas now is the time to get your outdoor entertaining area looking a million dollars.
- Give the lawn a good weed’n’feed and keep it well watered so it looks lush, green and ready for family activities on Christmas arvo.
- Scrub your outdoor furniture and add fresh new seat cushions if needed.
- Tidy up the pot plants in your alfresco: wipe down the pots, trim off any dead leaves or flowers, and give them a feed and a water.
- Sweep up, dust the cobwebs, and give your outdoor space a good hose-down.
- Check your barbecue is clean and you have a gas bottle in reserve if need be.
- Pavers looking shabby? Consider an outdoor rug to hide any stains and give your pergola a dash of panache.
Clean Out The Fridge
We can all confess to having rather a lot of forgotten-about items taking up space in back of the fridge. At Christmas you need all the fridge space you can get, so right now is the perfect time to give your fridge a thorough clean-out.
- Take everything out and throw away all items that are passed their use-by date.
- Wipe down the shelves and storage compartments.
- Defrost the freezer and fill up your ice cube trays.
Restock Your Supply of Batteries
If there are going to be kids at your house this Christmas, you need batteries!
- Test the random loose batteries stashed in your drawers to see if they still have a charge.
- Throw out any dead batteries and buy more in each size to be sure there are no tears on Christmas morning.
Declutter
If you haven’t spring cleaned and decluttered already, now is the time. Christmas brings with it so much stuff that we wonder where we will put it all, so be prepared by having a ruthless clean-out now.
- Pull everything out of your storage cupboards and discard, recycle or repurpose anything you don’t need and won’t use.
- Have a wardrobe cleanout and take any clothes in good condition to your nearest charity bin.
- Tidy out your kitchen drawers, where lots of unnecessary fluff’n’stuff tends to accumulate.
Inspect Your Christmas Decorations
Has your tinsel gone bald since you last saw it? Avoid the last minute panic and sort through your Christmas decorations now, checking to see if any have lost their Christmas spirit.
- Get everything out and throw away anything that is looking shabby, not chic.
- Now you can justify a trip to Kmart or Spotlight to buy a few new Christmas ornaments and decorations!
Plan Your Christmas Day Menu
It’s all about the food! Well, and the drink. And the pressies… But mostly the food. So start planning your Christmas day menu now.
- If you’re sharing the food prep, decide who is bringing which course for Christmas dinner.
- Place your order for Christmas ham, seafood, turkey etc.
- Make sure you have the right utensils, serving plates and equipment for the food you plan to serve. You don’t want to present your beautiful trifle in an ugly old casserole dish!
- Check how many guests you’ll have, and buy more cutlery, glassware and crockery if you need to. And don’t forget the napkins.
Once you’ve ticked these things off your list, you’ll feel totally ready to enjoy the silly season and the lead-up to a perfect Christmas Day at home in Adelaide.
